A Rainy Ride to Aruni Spirituality Ashram and Joydev Kenduli
While posted in Suri, I embarked on a solo bike journey to Joydev Kenduli. Despite the rainy season and rough roads, I managed to reach the Aruni Spirituality Ashram—a peaceful retreat nestled along the banks of the Ajoy River. The stay was deeply fulfilling, and the tranquillity of the surroundings is beautifully captured in the photographs I took. Booking and accommodation details are available on the Ashram’s official website.

Radhabinode Temple: Terracotta Legacy
Located near the river, the Radhabinode Temple stands as a testament to Bengal’s artistic heritage. Its terracotta panels depict scenes from the Ramayana, offering a glimpse into the region’s devotional and cultural richness.
🎶 Baul Fair: A Tribute to Jayadeva
Every year, a vibrant fair is held in memory of poet Jayadeva during Poush Sankranti (Makar Sankranti). It begins on the last day of the Bengali month Poush and continues until 2 Magh. The fair commemorates the day Jayadeva is believed to have bathed at the Kadaambokhandi ghat of the Ajoy River.
Thousands of bauls—wandering mystic minstrels known for their soulful songs and the iconic ektara—gather here, staying in around 160 temporary hermitages for nearly a month. Their music and presence keep alive the spiritual legacy of Jayadeva’s compositions, making the fair a living celebration of devotion and cultural continuity.

Absolutely—next time, be there to soak in the soul of Bengal. From the mystical melodies of the bauls to the terracotta tales etched in temple walls, Joydev Kenduli offers a sensory and spiritual immersion that words can barely capture. The river, the rain, the rhythm of devotion—it’s not just a place, it’s a feeling.
And when you do return, let the ektara guide your steps.
